Harley Davidson Shovelhead engine

It is said that the Harley Davidson Shovelhead engine is initially meant for water crafts, that is why its design is heavier than the other Harley Davidson engines. The Harley Davidson Shovelhead engine is also said to be designed for more horsepower, but its weight has an effect when the motorcycle is running. Therefore, shovelhead motorcycles should be used by riders that are experienced in riding big bikes.

The Harley Davidson Shovelhead engine was manufactured from the year 1966 up to 1984. It was designed to be air cooled, and is a V-twin motorcycle engine. The engine displacement was 1200cc, and was later increased to 1340cc starting 1979. It was manufactured in replacement of the Panhead engines. It was called shovelhead because of the shape of the rocker covers of the engine, which looked like a shovel.

Currently, Shovelheads are still being owned by Harley Davidson enthusiasts. Some of these models have been restored, with new parts and with the original engine. Custom made parts for Shovelhead engines are available and these bikes can be restored to its original looks. What is advantageous about Shovelheads is that with proper and constant maintenance, it will last for a long time and can still function and run like it has when it was first released in the market.

Restored Shovelhead motorcycles are expensive compared with newer models of other brands, and Harley Davidson enthusiasts and riders take pride in owning one. These old model motorcycles do not belong to museums for display; rather, these Shovelheads are best seen on the road.
